Interpreters will provide linguistic support to the START team, Department of State, United States Agency for International Development, and Department of Defense. The Translators will be stationed in a number of countries in the Middle East. Interpreter service will be required for the spoken language, and to a lesser extent for translation services. Languages consist of Syrian Arabic. Interpreters must adhere to standards of conduct as established by the operational or unit commander. Must have current and valid passport and obtain appropriate country visas as required.


Job Duties

Personnel must be able to pass an ESCAPE medical clearance and maintain a Worldwide Available (Class 1) medical clearance indicating no identifiable medical conditions that would limit assignments abroad.


No linguist will be permanently assigned. All contract interpreters may be required to rotate positions every 90 days. Contract interpreters must be willing to live and work in austere and hostile environments. Interpreters must adhere to the standards of conduct established by the operational or unit team lead.


Interpreters must have native proficiency in the target language and in English. Target languages consist of Syrian Arabic. Interpreters must be able to understand the essentials of all speech in a standard dialect and have broad enough vocabulary that he/she rarely has to ask for paraphrasing or explanation. Interpreters must be able to follow accurately the essentials of conversations between educated native speakers, reasonably make and answer telephone calls, understand radio broadcasts, news stories similar to wire service reports, oral reports, some oral technical reports and public addresses on non-technical subjects.


Work Environment

Interpreters must be willing to live and work in an area designated by the U.S. government as an imminent danger zone or hostile fire zone.

Interpreters are required to practice Operational Security (OPSEC). Interpreters must not discuss classified information or work issues.


Expected Hours of Work

Interpretation and translation services as required by the supported forces up to 8 hours per day, five (5) days per week. The interpreter may be required to live in austere field conditions, working and living with service personnel for up to 90 days at a time.


Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be a US Citizen and possess a TS or TS/SCI clearance.
